Process Selection Guide

When to Choose Custom Mold Tooling?

Choose Mold Tooling when you need:

High-volume repeatable part production above 1000 pieces.

Stable dimensional consistency, mass-production durability and long service life.

Mass-produced parts with custom surface textures, complex undercuts, insert-molding or two-shot requirements.

Consider CNC Machining when your parts:

Low-volume runs 1-500 pcs, no tooling budget, fast prototype turnaround.

Consider Vacuum Casting when your parts:

10-50 cosmetic samples, no investment in hard mold tooling.

Consider 3D Printing when your parts:

Very small quantity (1-5 units), frequent design iterations, complex internal geometry.

Mold Tooling Design Guidelines

Follow these principles to reduce mold complexity, lower cost and shorten lead-time:

Cavity Layout: Balance cavity quantity, part size and expected output volume. Multi-cavity preferred for high-volume orders.

Gate Location: Optimize gate position to avoid weld-lines, air traps and visible gate marks on cosmetic surfaces.

Cooling System: Design adequate cooling channels close to cavity surface for uniform cooling and shorter cycle time.

Undercut Mechanism: External / internal undercuts require sliders or lifters; large deep undercuts raise mold cost and complexity.

Draft Angle: Reserve sufficient draft angle, add extra draft for textured cavity surfaces to prevent drag-marks.

Mold Steel Selection: Match steel hardness and corrosion-resistance to plastic material, abrasive filler and surface requirements.
